Charles Wisseman, Mixed Media Artist

mirror 2019

My solstice piece-- My set of variably reflective circles from earlier this year ( made of metals, plastics, wood, bone, epoxy, etc) is combined with numerous silvered mirrors. Many small flat craft mirrors, makeup mirrors, pizza cutter, and several mirrors from cheap reflecting telescopes ( given to me by an old friend of my wife, who is a serious astronomy buff and optical junk collector). There are three levels-- bright mirrors attract your attention immediately as you try to see yourself in the fractured image at multiple focal lengths. Mixed media circles are complex and attract closer study next. Reflective epoxy background holds all together with many small dark mirror areas. I often represent dualities, but I like this tripartite presentation-- levels within me, material world, occult knowledge. Heavy stuff, but the whole project is about 35 pounds.
